How long does Vortex take to install? ›

The install process takes ~6 minutes. This is a considerable difference and makes me think there's an issue on the Vortex side of things that could improve.

Does the Vortex mod app have to be open when I play for it to work? Do I have to open Vortex then launch the game every time, or can I just launch the game without Vortex being open? Vortex is just an installer. It doesn't need to be on, since no mods depend on it.

Once you have located your game, the artwork will appear in one of two states. If the game artwork appears in colour, it means that Vortex has been able to find this game on your PC automatically. In this case, you can simply click on the game tile itself to move it from "Unmanaged" to "Managed".

Clicking on the tile will inform you that you need to set the game folder manually and open a file selector dialog. Simply navigate to the install folder for you game and choose "Select folder". Ensure that you are targetting the top level folder if the game executable can be found inside a subfolder.

Simply download the mod you want and install it by dragging and dropping the archive into the Vortex window or use the "Install From File" option. Wait for the installation to finish and deploy the mods. All options for these mods (if they have any) and for the Middle Earth Mod Loader itself can be modified in-game.

By default the path will be C:\Users\{YourAccountName}\AppData\Vortex , which can quickly be accessed by typing %APPDATA%\Vortex into any file browser.

Can be wherever you like, even on a different drive. We recommend keeping an extra folder in there for manually downloaded mods, as Vortex can manage these as well – you just have to drag-and-drop them into the client.

After completing, click the “Deploy Mods” button at the top of the Vortex software (as shown below) to apply these mods to the game (Vortex will automatically copy the mod files to the game installation directory), a confirmation window may pop up during this process, just confirm it.

As Vortex uses LOOT internally to sort plugins, there is no need for you to install LOOT. Vortex sorts your plugins based on LOOT and according to your own, custom rules (if specified). LOOT's functionality is therefore already implemented into Vortex.

If you want to take your game back to a default, unmodded state, you can use Vortex's Purge feature. Click the Purge Mods button from the Mods list and Vortex will undeploy all your enabled mods, leaving your game directory essentially unmodded.

Start Vortex using Steam Collection

Just create a "Vortex" Steam Collection and add your (Vortex compatible) game to it and start the game regularly. Vortex will start, with the selected game preconfigured and ready to mod.

The default location for the Mod Staging Folder is “C:\Users\YourUsername\AppData\Roaming\Vortex\skyrimse\mods”. To change it, go to Settings > Mods and change the folder to an (empty) folder of your choice that is located on the same partition as the game.

To make use of Vortex, you need to make sure that the mod folder is located in the same driver where the game is installed. If you encounter Vortex deployment failed issue, it is very possible that the mod folder is in another drive. So, you can try moving the mod folder to the game drive to fix the issue.
